Letter to Dr. Benjamin Rush

I wish to mention to you in confidence that Ihave obtained authority from Congress toundertake the long desired object of exploring the Missouri & whatever river,heading with that, leads into the Westernocean. About 10 chosen woodsmen headedby Capt. Lewis my secretary will set out on itimmediately & probably accomplish it in twoseasons.

It would be very useful to state for himthose objects on which it is most desirable heshould bring us information.

For this purpose I ask the favor of you toprepare some notes of such particulars asmay occur in his journey & which you thinkshould draw his attention & enquiry. He willbe in Philadelphia about 2 or 3 weeks hence &will wait on you.
